Quake goes Live tomorrow

id Software has announced that it will begin the open beta phase of Quake Live tomorrow, giving anyone who wants to play a chance to get stuck into the game.

Ostensibly, Quake Live is a streamlined version of Quake 3: Arena that runs in a browser and is available for free. id Software is hoping that the entire game can be financed by advertising around the game, thus negating a need for microtransactions or subscription fees.

In preparation for the open beta launch, all player accounts that were started in the closed beta phase are going to be wiped though. All current statistics from accounts not active in the last month will be wiped, according to Eurogamer. Player names and settings will remain though and id Software has pledged this is the last time it'll happen.

id Software is hoping that the low-end requirements for Quake Live, as well as the fact that it's based on Quake 3 (by far the most popular multiplayer game in the series) should mean that the game becomes a resounding success with cheap gamers who fancy some free frags.

Anyone interested in Quake Live, which was originally titled Quake Zero, can find extra information on the game, as well as open beta applications, over on the official website.

Team ICO’s Fumito Ueda Speaking at GDC 09

Don’t get your hopes up for any kind of megaton game announcements, but the Game Developers Conference website confirms (via VG247) that Fumito Ueda, the head of Team ICO and the man behind ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, will be joining quite a distinguished panel that’ll cover the future of game design.

Titled “Today and Tomorrow, East and West Game Design,” Ueda will be accompanied by Grasshopper Studio’s Goichi Suda (aka Suda51), Bethesda’s Emil Pagliarulo (lead designer on Fallout 3), and 8-4Ltd executive director (and old friend of 1UP) Mark MacDonald. The panel will cover “the most important recent trends in modern game design,” and “how they see them affecting the industry both in Japan and the West” (a topic of some popularity these days).

Ueda is known to be working on a mysterious new title for the PlayStation 3 (the first game that’ll come out of Team ICO since 2005’s Shadow of the Colossus), and naturally, Ueda’s appearance at GDC will spark hope that some kind of new info on it will be revealed. Again, we caution not to get your hopes up too high (it’s unlikely any big announcements will be made at a multi-participant panel), but then again, what is life without any hope at all?

Resident Evil 5 completed in 7 hours

Xbox World 360 Magazine has responded to claims they finished the long-awaited horror sequel in just 7 hours - considerably shorter than the "20+ hours" promised in US publications.

"As previously stated our first completion time, minus cut-scenes, was seven hours, thirty-six minutes and one second," the mag posted on its blog, even posting screenshots as proof. "For reference purposes, the total length of all the game's cut-scenes clocks in at 80 minutes.

"This time was achieved in single player and on the normal difficulty. This was not a speed-run, nor were we pressured for time, and was not, as suggested, merely the time to complete the first three chapters of preview code."

As the mag points out, this makes Resident Evil 5 considerably shorter than its predecessor - though you can't see everything in the new game that quickly.

"We wish to stress that you cannot see all there is to see in Resident Evil 5 in under ten hours - something which the review makes very clear. There are plenty of extras to unlock and reasons to keep playing. But the fact remains that the first run-through of the campaign is brief; especially when compared to 4's.

"We can only suggest that those citing 20+ hour completion times need to brush up on their gaming skills. :-)"

Read our summary of XBW's review here. Resident Evil 5 is out on March 23.
